Jenkins Arbitrary File Read: CVE-2024-23897 to RCE
The Jenkins controller at Vetrina Systems is running a version vulnerable to CVE-2024-23897 -- an args4j parser flaw that lets the CLI read any file from the server filesystem before authentication completes. An attacker used it to steal the Jenkins master key and credential store, decrypted stored service-account passwords offline, then authenticated and ran Groovy code through the Script Console to drop a persistent payload and pivot to connected build agents. Work from the SIEM access logs and XDR process evidence to trace every step from the first CLI probe to the reverse shell.

Investigation Tasks
Complete each task by investigating alerts and submitting your findings.
Locate the initial access vector
20An alert fired on the Jenkins controller for unusual CLI activity early in the morning. The controller should only receive authenticated web traffic from internal developer workstations and build agents. Before triaging anything else, establish exactly how an outside party gained the ability to interact with the server.
Identify what was taken from the controller filesystem
25The anomalous CLI requests did not stop at version probing. Multiple follow-on requests read files from the controller's filesystem. Identify the specific file path that, when combined with the credentials store, allowed offline decryption of stored account passwords.
Trace the credential use
25Between the file-read session and the subsequent hands-on activity, roughly two and a half hours passed. When the attacker returned, they used a different IP address and arrived with valid credentials. Identify the account used to authenticate.
Establish the execution method
25With valid credentials, the attacker accessed a Jenkins capability that provides direct code execution without any additional exploit. Identify the MITRE ATT&CK technique that best describes the method used to run code on the Jenkins controller after authentication.
Identify the compromised build agent
20The attacker did not stop at the controller. The Groovy execution was used to dispatch a malicious job to the build fleet. Determine which build agent was the first to execute the attacker's payload and establish an outbound connection to external infrastructure.
Pin the command-and-control destination
20The compromised build agent established a persistent outbound connection immediately after executing the dropper. Identify the external IP address it connected to.
Classify the initial credential exposure
20The entire intrusion chain started from a vulnerability in how Jenkins handled one type of input. Identify the MITRE ATT&CK technique that covers an adversary extracting credentials from configuration files stored on a compromised server.

View allAdobe ColdFusion: Deserialization RCE (CVE-2023-26360)
An internet-facing Adobe ColdFusion 2021 server is exploited via CVE-2023-26360 -- an unauthenticated deserialization vulnerability in the ColdFusion IDE endpoint that bypasses access controls. The attacker reads credential files from WEB-INF, then drops a CFM webshell and uses it to enumerate the host, recover configuration data, and exfiltrate harvested material to an external staging domain. The ColdFusion service account is then used to authenticate laterally to an internal HR data server via SMB. Piece together the intrusion from the ColdFusion web logs, the Windows process and authentication events, and the perimeter firewall records.
AWS Exposed Access Key: Enumeration to Data Access
A deployment service account's AWS access key landed in a public GitHub repository. By the time the secret-scanning alert fired, an attacker had already validated the credential and was working through the account: mapping IAM identities, pulling financial exports from S3, and launching compute-optimized instances to mine cryptocurrency at the victim's expense. Work the CloudTrail audit trail and the SIEM to reconstruct the full chain.
Entra ID Device Code Phishing: Token Theft
A Microsoft 365 user at a financial services firm receives a convincing phishing email asking her to enter a device code at the legitimate Microsoft devicelogin page. The code completes the attacker's OAuth request, handing over a valid token. Working through Entra sign-in logs, Graph audit events, and the email trail, trace how the token was stolen and what the attacker read from the victim's mailbox.
